It kind of feels like a road trip movie with a misplaced sense of urgency.
It’s a pretty thin plot, which kind of magnifies that this is an obligatory sequel and not a worthy one. Ellie and her brothers join the three mainstays, all the while the usual side-story takes place where Scrat the squirrel goes through outlandish situations just to claim an acorn. Meanwhile, Manny comes to worry that he may be the very last mammoth, until he comes across another mammoth named Ellie (Queen Latifah), who believes herself to be an opossum like her adopted brothers Crash and Eddie. But with the glaciers surrounding the valley melting they have to hightail it out of there before they’re swept away in a flood. The franchise’s heroes Manny the mammoth (Ray Ramano), Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo), and Diego the sabertooth tiger (Dennis Leary) have been living in a valley among other animals for some time. The Meltdown begins sometime after the events of the first movie, and global warming has started to take effect, melting most of the icy world the characters inhabit (though it’s all largely intact in the subsequent films).

On the downside, it seems the series was already wrung dry were story is concerned. On the bright side, this 2006 sequel was released when the franchise still had some dignity. They are as sweet and cuddly as giant animals with 5-foot tusks can be.Ice Age: The Meltdown was the second installment in the seemingly never ending Ice Age franchise, a series that has always been more successful than its quality should merit. Romano and Latifah make an adorable screen couple, at least in mammoth form. When Manny sees Ellie, his thoughts turn to reviving their species, to which she responds with not-if-you-were-the-last-mammoth-on-Earth sauciness. You can see the attraction on both sides of this blended family: the possum clan offered a new family for the orphaned Ellie, and the possum brothers get to seem speedy next to their sister. The possums are accompanied by a mammoth named Ellie (Queen Latifah) who thinks she’s a possum and that Crash and Eddie are her brothers. The strapping saber-tooth tiger, for example, went extinct, yet some of the world’s ugliest creatures -the possum, the sloth and the anteater - made their way to the present day.
The movie implies a kind of reverse “looksism” in the evolutionary order. Opossum brothers Crash and Eddie (Seann William Scott and Josh Peck) enjoy a nice game of possum slingshot, among other activities. Whereas Diego was a potentially treacherous Gollum-like character in the first film, he’s pure good guy here.īut Leary lends him enough of an edge so that he’s no cream puff, especially during the tiger’s exchanges with Sid.īut there’s not much time for repartee in “Meltdown,” since Scrat is not the only small critter engaging in misadventures. Sid teases Manny about becoming extinct, with Leguizamo’s lisping obnoxiousness and his character’s overly confident bearing combining to craft a sloth version of Ed Norton from “The Honeymooners.” The creepiest involve creatures long encased in ice who spark to life at the sight of Manny and the gang, suggesting a very early form of cryogenics.Īlthough never preserved in ice, Manny seems to have outlived all other mammoths.
Scenes of peril are plentiful but less scary than they were in “Ice Age.”
